• Brief re-cap of last week’s message.

Matthew 7:15- Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

  • False prophets are nothing new. Scripture mentions false prophets many times.

1st John 4:1- Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

  • We are reminded in Matthew 24 that the closer we get to end times, the more false prophets there will be.

Matthew 24:3-5; 24- And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? 4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

  • The reason there are so many false prophets is because people do not want to hear the truth. Our culture is rejecting absolute moral truth.

First, the definition of a False Prophet.

  • What is the definition of a true prophet?
    • A true prophet was God’s voice to the people.
    • They directly received the word of God and then faithfully delivered the Word of God.
    • The biggest difference between a true and false prophet was the source of their information.
      • False prophets would deliver messages that came from their own hearts and minds.

Jeremiah 14:14- Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

Jeremiah 23:16- Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.

Jeremiah 23:21- I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

  • Another big difference between true prophets and false prophets was motivation.
    • They told the people what they wanted to hear even though it was wrong.
    • They wanted financial gain.

Isaiah 30:10b- Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

Micah 3:11- and the prophets thereof divine for money…

2nd Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

  • Prophets do not exist today.
  • Know the scriptures so that you can tell the difference from a false prophet.

Acts 17:11- These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Secondly, the danger of false prophets.

Matthew 7:15- Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

  • Wolves were the biggest threat to sheep in those days.
  • Not all churches proclaim the truth of God’s Word.

Thirdly, the deception of false prophets.

  • When an enemy appears to be a friend it’s easy to be deceived and ultimately destroyed.

2nd Corinthians 11:13-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

  • A false prophet will transform himself to look like a true prophet.
  • If false prophets are so deceptive, how can we identify them?
    • They will ignore doctrine of the Bible or twist scripture in the way they want.
  • To identify false teachers, you need to know your Bible.
  • Beware of false teachers.
