Every generation rests on the sacrifices of the generations that have gone before.
There are a generation of people who have been at our church throughout the decades. They have bought in and have stuck around the highs and lows at CBT. There are people who sacrificially give and serve and have for years.
We have so much to be grateful for today at Canton Baptist. So much of what we enjoy has been made possible by the sacrifice of the previous generation. This leads us to this question:
Are we willing to make the necessary sacrifices in order that the next generation will continue to enjoy the blessings of this ministry?
If Christ tarries his return, we must make the sacrifices that it will take for the next generation to thrive like we have.
We learned in the last couple of weeks about unity. We must have an attitude of unity. For unity to become a reality we must stop thinking about ourselves, and start thinking about others. Unity can happen when there is an attitude of sacrifice.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (Philippians 2:5-8)
Verse 5 tells us that we must have the mind, or the attitude, of Christ. If we are “Christians” then we ought to have the same mind as Christ. If Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, then our mind and attitude should reflect the mind and attitude of Christ.
The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.
If Jesus had this attitude, then certainly we must have this attitude as well.
Paul wrote these verses to the local church at Philippi. This was written to a local church to have the mind of Christ as you deal with each other. What was the attitude? What was the mind of Christ? It was an attitude of sacrifice that was demonstrated in the actions of Christ Himself! When we have the mind of Christ, we will do the actions of Christ. How we think will always effect how we live.
What would Jesus do? Jesus would sacrifice. It is time for the world to see a church that thinks and acts like Jesus. The cross stands as the single greatest demonstration of sacrifice in all of human history!
The cross stands as the single greatest demonstration of sacrifice in all of human history!
Any sacrifice we make pales in comparison to the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. When we sacrifice we are putting the needs of others before our own needs. Isn’t that what Jesus did on the cross?
How can we embrace an attitude of sacrifice in our local church?
Here are two ways you can demonstrate sacrifice in your local church:
1. We can sacrificially give of our finances.
Every Sunday we are worshiping in these facilities because of what God has done through the lives of our old timers. Will the next generation enjoy the blessings we enjoy today?
Only 3-5% of American Christians tithe to their local church on a regular basis.
The church member with the attitude of sacrifice comes looking for how they can give and what they can contribute. What sacrifice can I make today for someone else?
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
To love Christ is to love the local church. To love the church is to give yourself to the church. If we love our church, we must be careful to give to our local church.
2. We can sacrificially give of our time to serve in the ministry of our local church.
We want a church where everyone is doing something, not where a few do a lot of things. How much time do you devote to serving in your local church?
Do you realize that if you tithed from your 168 weekly hours, you would give 16.8 hours to the Lord through your local church?
How much time are you willing to sacrifice to be in church and to be willing to serve in your local church? Do you have an attitude of sacrifice?
If you do, then you are going to act like Jesus! Are you willing to sacrifice time and finances to make a difference in our local church?
