The Lord’s Supper should be a time to worship the Lord.

  • A few observations about the Lord’s Supper given by Paul.
    • Paul gives the context in which to observe the Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:20
      • Come together as a church in one place.
    • Paul gives correction concerning the Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 20-22, 34
      • The Lord’s Supper is not to be observed for physical reasons, but spiritual reasons.
      • The focus is on Jesus, not ourselves.

Three applications of the Lords Supper.

1 Corinthians 11:23-30: For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

First, as we look to the past we are reminded of redemption.

  • Remembrance- never forget the sacrifice that was made for us on the cross. We must remember what the Lord has done for us.
    • We should explode with worship to our Lord.
    • Without Jesus we would be under sin and with no hope.

Secondly, as we look at the present, we’re reminded of repentance.

    • Take spiritual inventory.
    • Do you love Jesus more now than ever?
    • Do you have forgiveness that needs to be displayed?
    • Who has your life been about? You or others?
    • How has your faith and obedience been?
  • Don’t take the Lord’s Supper with a flippant attitude.
  • Sin must be dealt with before taking the Lord’s Supper.

Lastly, as we look to the future, we’re reminded of the return of Christ.

Revelation 5:9- And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

  • We will sing a new song! Jesus alone is worthy of our praise.
  • What a day that will be!

Do you know Christ as your Savior?  Do you know for sure you are going to heaven when you die?  You can know for sure you are going to heaven and that your sins are forgiven!
